View ProductThe Apollo Victoria Theatre is a 1930s-built Grade II listed Art Deco style building. It had an original glazed ridgelight on its roof to let light shine through onto a spectacular glass ceiling spanning almost the whole of the auditorium. There were also a mix of original glass lanterns and ridgelights over the offices and stairwells.
The challenge for Whitesales was to replace all of these with contemporary upgrades which matched the originals, overcame the fact that the rooflight had ‘sagged’ over time and satisfied the requirements of the conservation officer responsible for the building.
At the time of the replacement, the theatre was closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. This gave the Ambassadors Theatre Group which owns the Apollo the opportunity they needed to carry out the work, but it also meant that all the suppliers and contractors on the project had to overcome considerable logistical challenges.
Whitesales supplied a large 374m2 open ended ridgelight to replace the original, fitting it to existing steelwork and abutting walls to each end. We also replaced the nine smaller lanterns and ridgelights with modern upgrades. The units over the offices were fitted with opening sections for ventilation, while those over the stairwells incorporated louvres.
We liaised with the team at engineering consultancy Power Plan Services to supply detailed drawings at the design stage to ensure that the conservation officer responsible for the building was satisfied with the appearance and the performance of the rooflights.
We also worked closely with the roofing contractors GF Holdings on the fitting of the ridgelight to the upstand and even had some bespoke stand-off brackets fabricated to ensure that the ridgeline and slope of our new rooflight were ‘true’ and the sagging was eliminated.
Technically, our continuous roof lights could span the vast roof space and aesthetically, they could match the existing designs. We also advised and ensured that all were fitted with Class 2 non-fragile glass to protect anyone walking on the nearby roof walkways.
The property management team at the Ambassador Theatre Group responsible for the Apollo Victoria are delighted with the outcome, and the fact that the lavish Art Deco interior can now be seen in all its glory.
