Cowes Enterprise College, Isle of Wight
Client:
Isle of Wight Council - Cowes One School
Scope of project:
£32m new build involving large areas of green roofing and roof glazing
em.glaze monopitch and em.dome polycarbonate domes

The Challenge

Cowes Enterprise College is an impressive, £32 million new development with a multitude of attractive community facilities. With the key aim to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, the College has been designed as a landmark building, replacing the preceding High School. Central to the building’s design is the flat roof, which is modular in construction and includes large areas of roof glazing to optimise natural daylight and ventilation. In addition there will be a living green roof and a biomass plant, providing low cost and energy-efficient heating and hot water.

The Solution

Whitesales, worked closely alongside JM Architects and roofing installer John Nicholson Ltd to provide a complete design, manufacture and installation package for the rooflights, featuring products from the Em-Glaze glass monopitch and Em-Dome modular polycarbonate ranges. Whitesales’ highly detailed specification ensured that all the legal requirements for thermal transmission, impact resistance and ventilation were met in order to hit the BREEAM Excellent rating. The experienced team also advised on waterproofing membranes and upstands, and carried out site surveys to confirm dimensions to ensure a seamless specification and installation process.

The Benefits

• Excellent thermal efficiency
• Optimised natural daylight throughout
• Reduced safety risk for persons on the roof
• Aesthetically pleasing finish
• Industry-leading quality guaranteed rooflights which will stay watertight for years to come
