em.glaze flat glass Economy
View ProductThe leaking roof at Bracknell’s Coral Reef Waterworld required a complete upgrade, with consequent closure of the facility to the public. The project specified the addition of five new flumes, as well as more effective use of natural light. Whitesales was tasked with designing a rooflight specification over a 120m² area which had minimal interruption to the glazing span and was unobtrusive to pool users. The project involved a complex roof shape, provision of vertical glazing over the splash-pool area, and use of products and fixings compatible with high humidity and concentration of chlorine in the water. The Coral Reef waterpark was a unique place to work, but we had the overhead glazing knowledge to help.
Whitesales undertook a structural glass analysis and identified potential flaws in the roof design. This meant that the specification either needed to be changed from 10 to 15 panes or the roof pitch would need to be increased. The analysis was corroborated by an independent third party and the 15-pane solution was adopted. The profiled splash pool roof glazing was designed to be installed over structural steel with overlapping transom bars providing water channels and providing a small-pane aesthetic in accordance with the architects’ concept.
Whitesales based the proposed design on a modified version of the well-known em.glaze rooflight technology. In the main roof section, each pane measured 2m x 4m and weighed over half a tonne. Glazing was silicone-sealed with a 10mm specialist solar control toughened outer and 21.5mm laminated inner pane, heat-strengthened to eliminate risk of thermal fracture.
The Coral Reef Waterworld refurbishment was a complete success. Our bespoke aluminium rooflight lets in plenty of daylight, but is resilient enough to withstand the extremely humid conditions. The double glazed rooflight also helps maintain the pool's temperature and lets bathers enjoy the Waterworld without the roof leaking on their heads. Installing a new rooflight has done wonders for the park and we are extremely proud to have contributed.
